Moss and Christie did a great job of putting this year's Family Camp together...and then doing it again! Everything was all planned for a close to home camp at Pine Valley. Then a forest fire got in the way and at the last minute the change to Brian Head was made. Thanks to Lance is in order for helping to get an indoor location with his family's cabin up there. They were so generous to allow us to use it for free. We actually spent another Family Camp at that location in 2010. Staying there is "glamping" for sure. It was a great place to revisit. It's so comfortable and has so much fun stuff to do right in the cabin. It was a great success again. This time we had 37 in attendance. We just missed Bean and Ryan this year. JJ was in Hawaii, so we couldn't add him this time. Supe and Beacher had to make an early departure to go back to work, but we enjoyed them for the time they were there.
Moss and Christie took on the responsibility of procuring all of the food and supplies this time and then we just divided up the cost per person. They did a great job of it and the meals were all very tasty. Thank you. Well done.
Our schedule included:
Wednesday afternoon - arrival and a hike near the cabin. Some people went back down to Parowan for dinner at Hamburger Patty's Steakhouse. It's pricey, but also very tasty with lots of small town charm. That evening we just hung out playing games, staying in out of the rain and getting things unpacked.
Thursday: After breakfast we loaded up and drove over to Sidney Valley and played for a few hours there. It was beautiful, green, full of flowers and beautiful Sidney Creek. Supe added some fun by slow-mo filming the jumping of the creek by those who dared. The kids enjoyed hunting frogs and insects too. It was really lovely! We decided it was time to head back just in time...as a storm arrived bringing rain and hail! Then we enjoyed the afternoon and evening at the cabin. We gathered after dinner for a little memorial and games to remember Weed and how much she enjoyed Family Camps thru' the years. It was a sweet time to think of her. We all felt the loss of her not being there with us this year, but Derek said she was there with us. She will always be such a part of what got Family Camps started and kept them going. It was a good evening. Of course, we stayed up too late playing and visiting afterward.
Friday: We took a trip back down to Parowan to tour a pioneer relatives' home - Jesse N. Smith. It was interesting to see the life style they lived back then. On the way back to the cabin we stopped to see the cougar carving at a house along 2nd Left Hand Canyon road and then did the little Hidden Haven hike to the waterfall. Then it was back for lunch and an afternoon of napping, playing in the cabin and some went mountain biking. That evening after dinner we gathered for a talent show which was a lot of fun. Then it was out to the fire ring to cook up some S'mores and get really sticky! Sparklers brightened things up too. We were happy that the rain that was forecast didn't arrive.
Saturday: Time for clean up which everyone worked hard and got done PDQ. We got it looking good and then it was time to head back down to the heat or home to the northern parts. We enjoyed the beautiful, cool 50's - 60's weather up there along with the beautiful mountain scenery. And of course the best thing was enjoying each other's company. Another Family Camp accomplished and enjoyed! Thanks to Moss and Christie for making it happen! Supe and Beacher - you're up for 2017!
